Chronology

The Library of ASPETE (formerly SELETE) was founded in 1971 having in its collection a small number of books, a minimum number of journal titles, limited spaces and a parallel function as a department for distributing textbooks and notes of teachers to its students.

In 1973-1974, under the supervision of UNESCO, which was then in charge of the organization of SELETE, the first Rules of Operation of the Library were drafted by expert librarians, while at the same time its collection of book titles increased significantly.

From 1978 onwards, it started operating purely as the Library of ASPETE, providing its services to all members of the Foundation.

Initially the library was located in the reading room and access by students was free. From 1988 onwards the library was moved to a special area inaccessible to readers.

In 1997 the Library of ASPETE joined the European Program EPEAEK – of the 2nd CSF “Modernization and improvement of the operation of the Libraries of Higher Education” and this contributed to the creation of new additional spaces, while there was a significant increase in its collection.

During this period, the electronic cataloging of the collection of the “Library & Information Center of ASPAITE” began with an automated Library program and concerned both the current cataloging of its items and retrospective.

As of December 2016, the “Library & Information Center of ASPETE” is located in a newly built building. The building has been designed and constructed with modern methods, to meet the needs of the Library and is specially designed (natural lighting, appropriate temperature, etc.) for the proper maintenance of the material and the protection of the collection items.

The books are sorted and classified according to the Dewey Demical Classification, Edition 21 decimal classification system.
